Think You’re an Original? Think Again

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

exactitudes sapeurs parisA Dutch photographer’s 14-year experiment in finding people who are dressed alike proves that no matter how hard you try to be unique, there’s most likely someone out there who’s got on nearly the same outfit as you. Rotterdam-based Ari Versluis and his partner Ellie Uyttenbroek were inspired by the “striking dress codes of various social groups” to document sartorially similar people on the streets of Rotterdam, Paris, London, Rio de Janeiro and maybe more (I haven’t clicked on all of them yet!).

At first this depressed me. Why try to craft a one-of-a-kind outfit when being original is clearly so futile? Then I sarted to think of my dopplegangers as soul mates I’ve yet to discover. And I felt better.

Don a Cape for Mysterious Fabulosity this Season (and a Small Dog Won’t Hurt the Effort)

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Max Studio CapeI was totally going to write a post about capes ages ago, but during my procrastination and laziness Refinery 29 beat me to it. What prompted me to want to opine on said outerwear was a tres chic woman I saw walking down the Embarcadero in San Francisco wearing a lovely short-ish wool, probably felt, cape. Hours later I saw this fabulous version (addmittedly my affection for the cape might have something to do with the dog), which is on sale at Max Studio for $158. Then this morning when I saw Refinery 29’s article, I knew I was officially LATE. But now I can continue in my indolent manner and just link to them. Hooray for blogging.

Last Day for Online Hayden-Harnett Sample Sale

Hayden Harnett Clara Flap Bag

I can’t stop staring at Hayden-Harnett’s sample sale page. The Brooklyn label’s gorgeous bags, clothes, and accessories are deeply discounted online until the end of the day today. Deeply discounted does not necessarily mean inexpensive, but the quality and style of everything from HH is worth what you pay. This awesome bag, for example, was originally $600, now it’s $420. Still expensive but look at it: beautiful. It’s a lifer for sure. I bought this one on sale a several months ago and love it, use it a ton, and get constant compliments. They do, however, have some really cute change purses, glasses cases and luggage tags for around $15. And… if you’re a Billion Dollar Babes member in the San Francisco Bay Area, they’re having a real-life sample sale at 3232 Scott Street in SF on Sunday Nov. 16 from 11am until 5pm. I’ll be there with a mimosa in hand!

ShopBop and ShopStyle Contest, Week Three: Leather and Grunge

ShopBop ShopStyle contest Leather and Grunge

Voila. I love the outfit I created for week three of the ShopBop/ShopStyle/FabSugar (I can’t keep all these fabs and shops and styles straight anymore) contest. The theme is Leather and Grunge. I lived through grunge, and to be honest no one had enough actual style to put together an outfit like this. We were literally wearing our dad’s flannel shirts and boyfriend’s torn jeans. And usually Doc Martens. But these L.A.M.B. boots are a huge improvement, I do believe. And the accessories would have been my mother’s dream come true, so at least I would “look like a girl.”

foley + corinna maxi dress floral

shopbop foley + corinna maxi dress

I was just perusing ShopBop’s sale dresses and I fell in love with this one by Foley + Corinna ($248, originally $495). It reminds me so much of the dress I wore as “junior bridesmaid” when my mom got remarried in 1976. It was white with a floral pattern just like this one. It also had straps like these in the back, except they were in the front and attached to a choker collar. How very seventies!

Fall Is All About Purple

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Max studio purple and browlIn case you haven’t noticed, purple is the super hot color for fall. I have a love-hate relationship with purple. My high school’s colors were orange and purple. Here’s something I don’t often admit: I was a cheerleader. And our outfits were, you guessed it, orange and purple, with an emphasis on the orange. Also, purple was my favorite color in third grade, and therefore every item my grandmother buys me to this day is purple. I have drawers overflowing with purple hats, scarves and socks.

Still, the purple of fall 2008 is rather pretty. This Max Studio dress’s deep purple satin (from an email they sent) is reminiscent of Purple Rain rather than my natty cheerleader skirt. And I think we can all agree that Purple Rain marked a major high point in 80s fashion. It was a refreshing departure from Crockett and Tubbs’ pastel jackets. A man who can pull of puffy shirts, make-up and heels and still be hot to the opposite sex? Clearly sent from some magical land where logic does not reign.

Also, when I was working on the fall colors story (below) for Wired magazine (it was killed for space, sniff), I spoke to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, the organization that designers go to to help them choose what fabric’s they’ll use every season. She said this year was surprising because the typical oranges, greens and browns took second row at the fashion show. The hottest colors were blue iris and purple, and she said the trend will persist into next year. She also said we shouldn’t be too surprised.

Sometimes people forget that all fall colors are not necessarily warm. If you think about walking through a forest in the fall and you look down at the leaves and the colors you see some of those gorgeous pinky-purples and colors that we don’t normally think about as fall colors.

Damn, why did I get rid of all my Prince-esque regalia from the 80s? Schauplatz, here I come.

New Policy: No Saying Nice Things About Sarah Palin

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

This post previously said something nice about Sarah Palin’s jacket. Our new policy, in light of the unfriendliness of her campaign of late, is to refrain from saying nice things about McCain’s VP candidate and there fore the post has been removed. Thank you and carry on.

Vanessa Williams Rocks Emmys Red Carpet

Vanessa Williams Emmys Red CarpetLOVE this dress. I have a feeling it might get fugged, because it’s certainly out of the ordinary. But I love it. And she looks hot.

Fashion Knows No Political Boundries: Condi’s Got It Going On and Pelosi’s Pantsuits Must Die

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

condoleezza’s matrix outfitI never thought I’d be saying something so nice about Condoleezza Rice. But Karin Tanabe makes a good point in her HuffPost column today that Condi is one of the few female politicians who has figured out how to dress like a grown up without trying to look like a guy. I don’t love everything she wears, but I admire her brave wardrobe options.

Condoleezza “Have Wardrobe, Will Travel” Rice is one of the only power-wielding Washington women immune from the highly contagious pantsuit mania. Sure, she wears them but they’re in rotation with Akris separates and Oscar de la Renta mismatching pieces. Ever since she donned the infamous knee-high boots made for a lot more than walking at the Wiesbaden Army Airfield in 2005, she’s been slyly showing Washington that a woman in power can dress to identify herself, not as a means to hide. It’s a bold statement–more like Burlosconi in his expensive double-breasted suits or Don Corleone’s pinstripes than the predictable safe pantaloon of Hillary Clinton.

Goldenbleu Sale Tonight in San Francisco, Don’t Miss It

Goldenbleu sale San Francisco

If you’re in the San Francisco area, you must check out the Goldenbleu sale tonight. I went to the last one, and that’s why I’m grounded from going to this one. Goldenbleu’s shoes and bags aren’t eco, unfortunately, but they are damn gorgeous, and you’re guaranteed to have a new favorite item that has longevity. And buying things that you’ll love and want to keep for a long time, rather than thinking of clothing as disposable, is earth-loving behavior, n’est-ce pas? This has been your public service shopping rationalization for July 30, 2008, thank you!

Pamplemosses Bamboo Top, Tres Adorable

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Pamplemosses Bamboo TopI just found this adorable bamboo top by Pamplemosses on StyleHive. I would, of course, wear it with pants. But I love the swooping back and the pattern around the bottom. Plus, pamplemousse is my favorite foreign word, and the brand is a cute play on the Frenchy word for grapefruit. I also love the off-the-shoulder tee — I love an exposed shoulder — on their site (see below). The brand doesn’t have a ton of outlets (you can buy this shirt here on sale for $66), but when I emailed their info

Pamplemosses Off-Shoulder Top

address about where to buy their garments, they promptly returned a very nice email saying they could ship whatever I wanted directly to me, and even send me pics of their new Fall line, which isn’t on the site yet (I’ll post them when I get them!)

Steve & Barry’s Demands Ethical Practices

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Sarah Jessica Parker BittenSteve & Barry’s, the insanely inexpensive ($9 dresses) retail chain that sells Jessica Parker’s line, demands ethical practices from its subcontractors, according to a New York Times story published yesterday. How is it possible that a $9 dresses were not made in a sweatshop by 11-year-olds in Bangladesh? The article quoted the owners of the billion-dollar company, Steve Shore and Barry Prevor as well as “chief partnership officer,” who it seems would be responsible if Barry and Steve found themselves in a Kathy Lee Gifford-style debacle. Prevor said the key is the razor-thin profit margins.

No eco lines yet, but it can only be a matter of time. And my excuse for not previously knowing anything about Steve & Barry’s was that they don’t have a story in San Francisco. But, alas, they do indeed.

ShopBop Has An Eco-Friendly Boutique!

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

picture-1.pngMy favorite online shop has a whole section of eco-friendly clothing. Awesome, no? This little organic cottong number is from Beau Soleil, and their whole line is eco-friendly, according to the green label on Shopbop. But $300 for a giant sweatshirt? I might pay it. But I wouldn’t be happy about it. At least until the first time I wore it and felt fabulous.
